DEMOGRAPHIC CRISIS IN RUSSIA: GOVERNMENT'S PLANS TO REMEDY THE SITUATION DISMISSED AS IMPOSSIBLE

Judging by its demographic policy concept, the Health Care and Social Development Ministry intends to stabilize the population at the level of 142-143 million by 2015 and up it to 145 million by 2025. Specialists do not share this optimism and say that the population of the Russian Federation may go down to 125 million by 2025 and 100 million by 2050 (a report of the UN Development Program titled "Demographic policy of Russia: from consideration to action"). Low birth rate is traditionally attributed to financial problems and problems with housing. As things stand, 43% children in Russia live in the families existing below the subsistence minimum.
