Russian president and wife answer census questions

 
[Presenter] State leaders are taking part in the all-Russian census campaign. President Vladimir Putin answered the census questions for future statistician Darya Afoneva at his Novo-Ogarevo residence.

[Putin] Can he [the dog] take part in the census?

[Census officer, laughing] No.

[Putin] Then he must get off my seat. Go on, get off my seat.

[Correspondent] There's nothing said in the questionnaire about pets, or Koni the labrador would probably have been added to the form. Darya Afoneva, a second-year student from the Economics and Statistics University, notes down austere biographical details on the census form: forename, surname, place and date of birth, citizenship, level of education.

[Census officer] Your level of education?

[Vladimir Putin] Higher. Candidate of economic sciences.

[Census officer] Are you a Russian speaker?

[Putin] I am.

[Census officer] Native language?

[Putin] Russian.

[Census officer] What other languages do you speak?

[Putin] German.

[Census officer] Your native language?

[Lyudmila Putin] Russian.

[Census officer] What other languages do you speak

[Lyudmila Putin] German, Spanish and French. I'm not being modest.

[Correspondent] The four Putin family members have four foreign languages among them, the census showed. Their daughters were able to add English to the languages of their parents.

[Census officer] Mariya Vladimirovna Putin?

[Lyudmila Putin] Mariya.

[Census officer] Yekaterina Vladimirovna Putin?

[Putin] Katerina.

[Correspondents] Mariya and Katerina still are at secondary school, so questions about place of work are left blank for them. The president, just like all adult census participants, is asked to state his general work details.

[Census officer] State all your sources of income.

[Putin] My salary. What other sources?

[Census officer, showing list of possible answers] Income from my place of work?

[Putin] That's right.

[Census officer] What is your main type of work? Are you a hired worker?

[Putin, laughing] Yes.

[Census officer] What sector of the economy do you work in? Administration?

[Putin] Administration.

[Census officer] What goods or services are provided by the enterprise at which you work?

[Putin] Services for the people.

[Census officer] Your business or type of work? Your job title.

[Putin] President of the Russian Federation.

[Correspondent] In the space of 20 minutes, four pages of questionnaire are completed. Future statistician Darya has coped with her first job and Vladimir Putin gives her a book to remember him by: The History and Formation  of the Land of Russia. The census should add a new page for that book in
times to come.
