Average age of Russian women having first baby rises to 35

14.09.2006, 23.04

MOSCOW, September 14 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia is not an exception to the world tendency of the increase of the age at which women have their first baby. This tendency is seen in many countries, participants in the international seminar devoted to the low birth rate in Russia said on Thursday.

This is connected with changes in the way of life, said Anatoly Vishnevsky, the head of the Centre for Demography and Ecology of Man at the Institute of Economic Forecasts of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He noted that women now strive first to achieve a social status and stability and then start families.

So the average age of a Russian woman having her first baby rose to 35 years. In this connection the scientist suggested that material support be given to families having their first and second babies when the parents are not older than 40 years of age. Such support was given so far to the parents not older than 30.

It is also important to adjust medical services so that there should be no health problems for the women having their first babies at an older age and for the infants, Vishnevsky noted.

There is also the world tendency for the birth of children out of wedlock. Thus, it was noted at the meeting that more than half of children in Estonia and Sweden are born out of wedlock. About a third of newborn babies in Russia are also born out of wedlock. Vishnevsky deplored the fact that there is a high incidence of abortions in Russia contrary to the world tendency. Other countries, specifically, in the West and in East Asia, give much attention to effectiveness of contraception. Nikolai Gerasimenko, the representative of the State Duma Committee for Health Protection, said that Russia should aim not just for increasing the birth rate but for producing a healthy new generation. And newborn babies should also be the cherished babies.

Gerasimenko has the information that three million out of the nine million children in Russia are raised in orphanages, under guardianship, or in boarding houses, or are just homeless. He said at different estimates only from five to 30 percent of children in Russia are regarded healthy. This is associated with a wide spread of alcoholism and drug addiction, which leads to the birth of sick children. And their natural parents [un]usually refuse to accept them. The Duma representative said the demographic policy of the state should include the popularisation of the healthy way of life and family values.
