Ukraine's mortality rate exceeds the birth rate two times

(ForUm, 13 February 2003)

Ukraine's mortality rate was almost twice as high as the birth rate in 2002, according to the State Statistics Committee. Last year 391 thousand babies were born, while 755 thousand people died, and 4,024 of them died at the age of less than one year, i.e. every tenth child per one thousand. The number of the deceased exceeded that of the newborn in all the Ukrainian regions in 2002, and the ratio between the births and deaths was 8.1 to 15.7 per 1,000 people, the committee reported.

The lowest birth rate (minus 13 per 1,000 people) was observed in the Chernihiv region last year, the State Statistics Committee told Interfax-Ukraine.

As usual, a low birth rate was registered in the Poltava, Sumy and Luhansk regions. The Donetsk region hit the record according to the number of the newborn (31,216 people), as well as the number of the deceased (82,267 people).

According to the committee, 317 thousand couples married and 183.5 thousand divorced in Ukraine in 2002.

According to the last national census conducted Dec. 5 through Dec. 14, 2001, the population of Ukraine is 48 million 416 thousand people.
