Nine countries have adopted a law to legalize same-sex unions. The specific contextual and historical factors that led to the adoption of the laws will be examined to explain the choices made by the States in selecting different types of legislation. An analysis of the national debates that have surrounded the construction of the laws should reveal how the laws have been built and also how they have been received. A careful study of their "making of", contents of political discussions and scientific arguments used during the preparation of the laws and after their entry into force may give an insight of broader concerns on specific social schemes. Reviewing the kind of arguments which have been used in the different countries may reveal different public, social, legal stakes. (In particular has the relation between family and filiation been discussed everywhere at the same level?) An analysis of how it has been brought up in the debates, will also bring information on public opinion towards homosexuality as well as the level of its social recognition.
