(Kyodo) The leaders of the Group of Eight major powers agreed Sunday to improve international cooperation in the surveillance and monitoring of infectious diseases, including better coordination between the animal and human health communities.

"A vigorous response to the threat of infectious diseases, the leading cause of death worldwide, is essential to global development and to the well-being of the world's population," they said in a document adopted at the G-8 summit that started Saturday in St. Petersburg.

"Major diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and measles continue to exact a heavy toll on economies and societies around the world, particularly in developing countries," the document said. "For a large number of these diseases there are still no effective drugs, vaccines or other treatment available for the majority of the population in less developed countries."

The G-8, which groups Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States, confirmed the immediate need to solve related problems facing Africa.

"The situation is especially acute in least developed countries, particularly in Africa where governments and their people face limited access to prevention and essential healthcare information, inadequate capacity of healthcare systems," the document said.

It called for "immediate attention" as for the recent emergence of avian influenza and the accompanying possibility of a human pandemic.

"Effective, coordinated and comprehensive action is necessary to combat all infectious diseases," it said.
