April 25-26

The Russian Federation considers infectious diseases control as a priority among the topics for discussion in during it’s presidency in G8 in 2006 along with the problems of energy safety and education. This decision is made in strong consistency with previous summits beginning with early 90th when this topic was actively discussed and was followed by various initiatives dealing with a wide range of aspects of infectious diseases control. There is a clear understanding that the G8 discussions on the infectious diseases should be based on the analysis of the implementation of previous initiatives and include concrete actions based on the scientific-based approach and analysis of real needs and demands.

According to the workplan of preparation for G8 summit 2006 in St.Petersburg the International Conference “Infectious Diseases Control: from Initiatives to Actions” is planned to be organized in Moscow on April,26 2006. The Conference is organized by the Expert Council of Steering Committee for G8 Presidency of the Russian Federation in 2006 and Federal Service on Surveillance for Consumer rights protection and human well-being.

The goal of the conference is to conduct productive exchange of opinions of the international stakeholders on the effectiveness of the implementation of G8 initiatives concerning various aspects of infectious diseases control and on further steps that should be undertaken in this field. The results of the conference will be brought to the agenda for G8 sherpas meetings and discussions, and will be considered seriously in the process of development of the final documents for G8 summit 2006.
