07:59:00 GMT Ashgabat. (Interfax) - Turkmenistan's population increased 6% to 6.367 million as of April 1, 2004. The population of Turkmenistan grew by 68,200 in the first quarter of this year, says a quarterly report of the National Statistics and Information Institute Turkmenmillikhasabat. The largest population growth, 7.7%, was registered in Ashgabat, which has 839,000 residents, and growth was the smallest in the Mary region, 5.6%. The report says 46.8% of Turkmenistan's population live in towns, and 53.2% live in rural areas. The highest percentage of rural residents is in the Mary region (72.3%), and the highest percentage of urban residents is in the Balkan region (78.8%).
