National Condom Week is set to begin
this week, with support from politicians and celebrities.
The annual week, organised by Durex and set to run from the 12th to the
16th, comes as experts at some health groups warn of the "sexual health
crisis" in the UK.
Speaking on behalf of Terrence Higgins Trust, Colin Dixon has warned
that the impact of STIs is being felt now more than it ever has.
“The UK is in the middle of a sexual health crisis as more people are
testing positive for sexually transmitted infections and HIV today than
at any point since the NHS began," Dixon said.
He adds that events such as Condom Week will help raise awareness of
the issues surrounding sexual health, and ensure the next generation is
protected as much as possible.
The week is also being support by politicians, including the chair of
the Health Select Committee, David Hinchliffe.
"Sex features heavily in our media and young people are therefore
influenced by it at an early age," he said today.
"It’s vital they receive good sex education at an appropriate age so
they’re able to make informed choices about their sexual health."
Celebrities backing the campaign include DJ Sara Cox, actor Martin
Clunes and So Solid Crew MC Squami.
It will see free sexual health leaflets distributed throughout
Superdrug stores, which will also give a 50p donation to THT for every
pack of Durex condoms sold.
