Population of Kazakhstan exceeds 15 million

Astana. (Interfax-Kazakhstan) - The population of Kazakhstan has surpassed 15 million, the State Statistics Agency reported on Thursday.

"The republic had a population of 15,000,065 as of June 1," says a press release from the agency.

"The 15,000,000th resident of Kazakhstan was registered in one of the 2,480 registration offices on May 28, 2004," the press release reads.

The natural growth of the Kazakh population increased by 45,579 in January-May 2004, while migration growth grew by 3,286.

Kazakhstan's population stood at 14,951,200 on January 1, 2004.

The size and makeup of the Kazakh population changed significantly when Kazakhstan became independent in 1991 as was the case in many other CIS countries.

Kazakhstan's population had been declining from 1992 to 2001 because of a decreased birth rate, an increase in the death rate, and emigration. The birth rate started growing, fewer people emigrated, and more people began to immigrate in early 2002.
