ITAR-TASS
Moscow, 10 January, ITAR-TASS correspondent Sergey Ostanin:
Last year Russian border guards prevented 69,000 foreigners from entering
Russia, director of the Russian Federal Border Guard Service Col-Gen Konstantin
Totskiy said today at a meeting with official representatives of the border
guard services and coastguard services, as well as representatives of the
military-diplomatic corps from foreign embassies accredited in Russia.
He said that the foreigners were turned away because they produced forged
or inadequate documents. Totskiy said that "illegal migration is still
the main problem both for Russia and Western Europe". He said that citizens
of over 30 states, including those with which Russia has no common borders,
seek to enter Russia with the aim of either staying there or travelling
on to other European states. Totskiy said that mainly representatives of
the CIS countries, Afghanistan and Vietnam settle down in Russia because
of their diasporas there. Those from India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan attempt
to use Russia to get to the West, the general said.
