Men account for a bigger part of the total number
of HIV-infected people in the Russian Federation, and make up a majority
among the adults - 75%. However, the ratio is currently changing, and a
proportion of women (among new HIV+ cases) increased from 24.1% in 2001
to 33% in 2002. The increased number of women among the HIV-infected people
reflects a greater risk of heterosexual transmission.
The HIV prevalence in Russia is highest at age
group 20-30: 63% (men), and 57% (women). Nearly each fifth HIV+ is a teenager
(15-19 years). The average age of people living with HIV/AIDS is 25 years
(men), and 23 years (women). The proportion of infected men in age group
20-25 years has already exceeded 1%, and HIV prevalence in the group 25-30
is approaching this proportion. HIV prevalence among women is lower, age
group 20-25 year shows the highest level of 0.4%.
